Il piano armonico di una chitarra tipo Selmer Maccaferri è di spessore piuttosto sottile pari a circa due millimetri, ha la particolarità di essere bombato e piegato a caldo all’altezza del ponte. Questa piegatura unitamente alla presenza di catene traversali permette di contrastare la forte pressione esercitata dalle corde sul ponte dovuta dall’angolo di incidenza dell’attaccacorde e di enfatizzare i toni acuti dello strumento. La catene principali del piano sono poste in modo trasversale, a scala controventata (come si dice in gergo), una struttura molto semplice che si usava sia i Italia che in Francia negli anni trenta per le chitarre con corde in metallo.
Ai lati della buca due catene larghe e piatte poste in modo obliquo convergono verso il manico rinforzando questa zona delicata. Nella zona del ponte due “bretelle” poggiano sulle catene traversali vicine a supportare la pressione dello stesso. Queste le caratteristiche che determinano fortemente il suono particolare di una chitarra Manouche.
The soundboard of a Selmer Maccaferri type guitar is rather thin thickness, equal to about two millimeters, and it has the particularity of being rounded and hot bent at the bridge level. This bending, joined to the presence of transverse chains, allows to counter pressure from the strings on bridge due to the angle of incidence of the tailpiece and to emphasize the instrument high pitched sounds. The main chains of the soundboard are arranged transversally, in ladder braced (as we say in slang), a very simple structure that is used both Italy and France in the thirties for guitars with steel strings.
On the sides of the soundhole, two chains wide and flat placed obliquely converging towards the handle, reinforcing this delicate area. In the area of the bridge two “braces” are based on transverse chains to support the pressure of the same. These are the characteristics that strongly determine the particular sound of a Manouche guitar.
